Vibration Problem!!!!

Post by raymond »

Problems with our Albin 28 - 98
Cummins 270 with V-Drive
8 foot shaft with supports at each end only
Concerned about critical speed
Have checked everything else for possible causes of this vibration
Anyone else have problems with design? Or anyone with this design and no problems
Any help greatly appreciated.

I have pretty much the same set up. When I purchased my boat it vibrated the deck at idle speed and was smooth above 800 or so RPM. Replacing the motor mounts made a big difference. I suppose you checked the alignment.

Have you had the shaft checked? Prop? Engine mounts?

There are many possible sources of vibration. Given how many 28's are out there with the same drive system I don't think you can look at a design issue. Our 28' didn't have any vibration problems, except for the time I hit a submerged log and bent the prop AND the shaft!

When I had the engine pulled from my 2000 28TE two years ago to replace the timing belt I found out that the engine alignment was off 1-1/4" at the aft motor mounts. This had to be the way the factory aligned the engine as it had never been out before. Also noticed uneven wear in cutlass bearing. Could not turn shaft by hand. Drilled new alignment holes in mounts and aligned the shaft. After I could turn shaft by hand.
