Yanmar 6lpa mixing elbow replacement

Post by alandry100 »

Hi all,
I have been mulling doing this myself and just trying to gauge the difficulty. I am fairly handy do a lot of my own work on outboards but this is a bit of another animal. I know this topic has been discussed at length but I cannot find a written procedure, step by step, or youtube video (for this engine) anywhere. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Isn't bad if you are handy. I did the HDI replacement in a few hours. Need a good sized wrench for the water outlet and the clamps were 11mm. I only had an 11mm wrench but invested in an 11mm deep socket. Loosely fit everything, have a helper holding the gaskets in place and tighten up.

Did that a few years ago, had problems with small exhaust leaks after the surgery.
Started up at night and used a flashlight to see where the leaks were from, then next day repositioned the elbow ever so slightly to eliminate the leaks, tested at night again..
After a few tries got it tight with no leaks, but torquing the bolts quite a bit.
Recommend using a torque wrench.

Use some exhaust paste when assembling. Will help massively with any leaks as it’s a really tight fit.
