Engine stalled at cruising speed

Post by Albesaurus »

Yesterday I was out about 5 minutes running at 3200 RPMs when suddenly I lost power and the engine stalled. There was no warning or even the slightest sputter.... it was as if someone pressed the kill switch. I immediately checked the racor filter but I didn’t see any water or much debris to mention. After 5 minutes of looking around the bilge for something obvious. I started her up and ran again with no problem. A few hours later a similar experience at about the same RPM. Only this time the power loss was a spilt second and then it was back. I did not stall out. Then ran all the way home no more issue.

I’m guessing fuel clog that worked it’s way out or what?? Both racor and secondary were changed less than 20 hours ago. I did not take on any new fuel in the last month or so. Only other thing I can say is that it was extremely lumpy out and I was taking it on the stern quarter. Thinking maybe the fuel pickup lost contract for a second???

This is a 2002 28 with 315 yanmar.

Thanks

Instant diagnosis from half a world away! And for FREE!

Membership in AOG...priceless.

(Let us know if Tree nailed it, which I am fairly certain he has.)

Quite likely the relay to the fuel shut off solenoid. A fuel quality or fuel filter issue would would show up differently than what you describe.

Certainly was. I was headed out fishing with my wife and 3 kids. While I was looking around in the bilge my 8 year old was like..” dad why did you have to stop so fast?....I even started second guessing my own mind that maybe I leaned on the kill switch while at the helm...

Where is this relay located and where would I order it?

Thanks Men! Always great info here.

nevermind... i just answered my own question. It’s near the injector pump. I’ll grab a part number off it and source it.

Thanks again

Mine was scary too as I was running WOT when it decided to shut her down. Check out my posts in this thread, all you need is here: http://www.albinowners.net/aog/viewtopi ... ilit=relay
