Looking for ideas concerning my A-25 tranny jammed in Reverse gear
Ran aground on a gravel/stone bar (thought we were on the safe side of shoal makers) and when floating free put the motor in forward. Motor quickly stopped as if the prop had wound up a fouled line. Sheriff's patrol towed us back to our marina. Son dove under boat w/scuba next day and found no fouled line, but a nickel-size chunk of prop blade missing at tip.. Started motor OK in neutral. Shifted to reverse and prop pulled against mooring lines. Shifted into forward and the motor stopped. Couldn't shift out of forward. Disconnected shift linkage (we have a 2-lever Morse) and found the prop shaft only wanted to turn in reverse. Moving shift yoke on tranny to neutral and forward still had shaft turning in reverse. ???

Re: Looking for ideas concerning my A-25 tranny jammed in Reverse gear
Joe DeMers at Sound Marine Diesel tells me I need another tranny. He sold me the one I've got not and I installed it myself.
I need to pull the prop, too. Anyone here ever used a "side-operating" prop puller (Joe told me about them) instead of a conventional end-operating tool?

Can't find an edit function. Omit "not" from the second sentence.

i think my type of prop puller might be what he is referring to. It works great, I'll post a picture.

Re: Looking for ideas concerning my A-25 tranny jammed in Reverse gear
Sad to hear that happened. Hope everything works out OK. We grounded on sharp rocks in Tsehum Harbour (Vancouver Island), BC on July 6, but used my dinghy & outboard to pull us off just for that reason, fearing prop damage if we had tried to back off with the main engine. Luckily no damage except for a few minor nicks & dings along the bottom of the keel.

Re: Looking for ideas concerning my A-25 tranny jammed in Reverse gear
I've rented what could be described as a "side operating prop puller" from my local marine supply store. Like this one:
Super heavy duty and probably overkill to pull an A25's wheel.
I wouldn't recommend buying one though. This one cost $530!

Did the shift lever spin on the shaft stopping it from making the necessary throw to get forward?

Is that the MS transmission? Seawater cooled, short throw gear selector on top of gear box, monster external rubber seal at output end of tranny?
