Mandatory for marinas to carry low sulfur diesel dyed

Post by Butch »

Eff Oct 1, high sulfur should be replaced w/ low sulfur dyed fuel, than in a couple of years ( if not before) it will be Ultra Low . yes it is about 6 cents higher in cost. Some marinas have been carrying this product for a year

If you could, would you mind posting a source for this information? What jurisdiction(s) are affected? What agency is responsible? What law madates it?

I don't like it when information like this is passed along as fact without any supporting documentation. That's how destructive rumors get started. I'm not doubting your honesty or integrity, just looking for more details.

Thanks.

Doug,

Thank you for posting that information. This is what I'm talking about. Assuming that we can trust the folks at Chevron, it looks as though this ULSD has already been implemented in all 50 states and Canada. This would have been done in June of this year for everywhere but California, who did it back in January.

Actually, after closer review, it appears that marine and off-road diesels only have to meet the <500ppm standard and that there is no timeline for them to meet the <15ppm standard outside of California.

Butch, are you saying that you have additional information as to the implementation of a lower standard for off-road diesel fuels?

The mandate comes from the EPA over the Refining companies. The locomotive and marine industry follows the On Road and off road use of diesel. This is a difficult forum to explain the future of marine use and the applicable jurisdiction throughout the US. As mentioned California and Canada have their own agenda to expedite the use of ULS.
The ULS (15PPM) is to be in use by 2010 and Marine by 2012. Some refiners, terminalling companies, and marketers will begin to sell the ULS now. In the mean time, we on the east coast will be buying LS and not HS as we have been in the past, and we we will start seeing ULS over the next couple of years.

Got a heads up notice from Cummins telling its customers that when switching between Diesel, low sulpher & ultra low sulpher that the gaskets are effected. For example; the gasket on the lift pump on the Cummins will swell up when you switch from diesel to low sulpher and will actuall shrink when you move to ultra low sulpher possibly causing the gasket to leak. They recommend changing that gasket or others as soon as you notice any leak since it will only get worse.

We have been in the business of selling, trading, and marketing petroleum products for 35 years to the various resellers and endusers in the Middle Atlantic States including Marinas.
