No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
Been reading on a board called The Hull Truth that a bunch of folks with single engine boats are being denied insurance to include the Bahamas..
I am in the process of getting a used Albin 28 TE for numerous Bahamas trips per year and it neve crossed my mind that the insurance companies would have a problem.
Heck, Super Tankers are single engine and they get insured all the time..
Any recent insurance problems with single engine Albin owners?

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
I suspect there is more to this than engine configuration.
Our 28 was insured for East coast and Bahamas with the only exclusion
being we couldn't be down that way before November. The policy
on our current boat is far more limiting even though it is with the
same company. Age and condition (survey) at time of purchase
seemed to be more of a factor than anything.

I also have insurance that covers trips to the Bahamas. When I was shopping insurance companies most gave two prices, with and without Bahamas, The difference was less than $200.

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
Ok and thx gents.
I will cross that bridge when I get to it.
Trying to guesstimate fuel coast for a Bimini round trip. Roughly $100. Does that sound right?
17 knots, 8 Gallon per hour, 3 hours each way.
(Cheap fuel in Fort Lauderdale when buying from a truck at private docks)

No, but a good start.
Single engine boats look even better when the fuel prices start climbing again.

I wouldn't plan on "round trip" fueling. You never know what is going to happen out there, I'd refuel in Bimini and view the added fuel cost as peace of mind insurance.

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
True, but how much reserve should one carry?
130 gallon tank, 26 gallon each way, or make it 30:
On arrival back in Florida, 130 - 60 = 70 Gallons.
Enough for another round trip with 10 gallons left in the tanks, 2 hours at slow sailing, plus
A Jerry jug tucked away somewhere on the boat.
Been flying airplanes with a lot less reserve fuel than that..

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
When I do my long trip calcs I use 10 gal per hr. Once boat is loaded down this seems to be a little more realistic. It does seem to come in a little less than that, but a little more than the 8. Mine is a 28 flush deck with 315. Ran 177 miles in 10 hrs burning just a little under 100 gal. Holds 162. Tides play a huge roll in speeds, they ranged from 15.5 to 20 knts at same RPM. I would fill up over there, these boats tend to ride better with full tanks with little effect on performance, especially out in the big pond.

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
Thx Carl good info.
Doing survey and sea-trial tomorrow on a 2002 28TE with Yanmar 315, engine box model.
Bahamas trips a month or so later when I learn to know the boat and perhaps have put an auto pilot on it.
(Is there a friction lock on the wheel so you don't have to steer continously even withou autopilot ?)

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
I don't see why Fort Lauderdale should cost so much more than Stuart Fl. I am paying about half of that. A plan for hurricanes was required and I have my boat hauled when I leave in the spring and put back in when I return, which this year was just last night. I think it would be the same if I were here all year as long as I have the ability for haul out for any named storm.

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
Good point Mr. Russell. Who is your underwriter?
I got discounts for my commercial ticket and merchant mariner sea time, private dock, etc but still expensive, I agree.
(I asked for a $65k agreed value.)

Re: No Bahamas insurance for single engine boats?
I don't like to recommend things that can result in a financial liability but I am using a company called Offshore Risk Management recommended by the broker that sold me my Albin. I also checked other companies and they were within range but ORM was the cheapest. This is an international company but a Florida representative is at this number (954) 430-3711. Their website is http://offshorerisk.com/en/ There may be other explanations for the difference. My insurance value is $71,000 and the deductible 1,420. I don't have a tender to be covered.
In Fort Lauderdale you also have World Marine Underwriters that gave a good price and I may consider them when renewal comes. I would like to have a local agent.
Let me know if you find out something that I should know about ORM.
I am not selling my boat unless a great 31 or 35 comes on the market, preferably with a single common rail Cummins.
