Bow pulpit comments and ideas welcome

Post by jleonard »

I am going to modify my existing bow pulpit so that I can accomodate a second anchor and have it ready to deploy in case of emergency, or for those occasions when I need to have two out.
Currently I had been using a 44# Delta with a 20# Danforth secondary on the rail, but deploying the #2 (the anchor) is cumbersome and the first mate can't do it. The 20 is also too small to depend on for a 40 ft boat.
So...... I bought a used 35# Danforth high tensile and will make that my primary. The Delta will become #2.
My existing pulpit is a little on the small side, but I think I came up with a workable mod, thanks to the pulpit arrangement I saw last summer at our Coecles Harbor rendezvous.
I have posted some pics below of the set-up in sawhorses. It does appear to work, both anchors fit and do not interfere. YES I plan on using the pressure treated piece you see (stained dark) and if I like it after this summer I'll consider changing to a piece of real wood.
I would use some strips of mahogany on the bottom surface to tie the added piece to the original pulpit secured with screws and epoxy.
I also included a picture of the current set up so you can judge the space I have available.
(I have my windlass apart and am rebuilding it so only the base is shown with the new set up)
Comments and new ideas appreciated.

JLeonard,
I especially like how clean this looks, and I'm confident you'll engineer it right. My only comments would be that the forward end should probably be curved to match the bulwark's plan view, and that the forward end grain of both planks needs a cover board (athwartships). I apologize in advance for how fussy this sounds, and how much extra work it would create. Looks good, have fun.

Thanks Joe. I actually did plan on shaping the added piece to fit the bow once it is installed. Might not be curved, but will be shaped.
However I didn't think about covering the end grain, good idea, I think I have some teak to do that.

Hey Jay,

I'm wondering where you'll secure the second rode when you have both anchors deployed? You wouldn't want them both on the same cleat.

Looks good btw!

They would both go on the sampson post and I would most likely run the rode from the plow over the center roller just to keep everything on the centerline.

This is the "finished product" for this season. If it works out to my satisfaction I will rebuild it using mahogony or oak (right now its pressure treated 2x8)

Looks perfect. How is the new fastened to the existing? Is it also fastened down through the gunnel cap?

There are 3 "scab strips" underneath to tie it together (screwed and glued) and yes also screwed thru into the gunnel cap (and plugged)
