28 TE Boat stands

Post by Serenity »

This will be the first time that I will be bringing the yacht home. What size boat stands should I purchase. I am only supporting the stern with stands. Should I get 25-38, 29-46 or 33-50? I feel that the 29-46 will do the job.

I am in the same "boat" as you. Blocking it on the 3rd of October, so I will let you know. The boat draws 38 inches so I think you are on the money if the keel just rests on some 2X8 s.

While my boat (A-30FC) is slightly different than yours, I block it as follows.
I rest the aft end of the keel on double 6X6s, that is 5 1/2 inches off the ground. I block the forward end about in line with the forward sling marks using four double 6X6s and one 2X6, for a total of 23 1/2 inches. This makes the boat slightly down at the stern, just enough for cockpit drainage.
With this blocking arrangement I place a pair of yard stands near the forward end of the boat, just aft of the forward set of blocks. The pads on these yard stands are placed against the lip on the outer part of the hull. The pads turn out to be about 48" off the ground. The stands I use (which were provided by the selling dealer) have a 36" base and will extend to about 60", so they are about half extended when in place. I have two sets of shorter stands that I place midships and near the stern. All stand pairs are chained across under the boat to prevent slippage. I use three pairs because it is recommended that there be one pair for every ten feet of boat length.
If you are using just one pair of yard stands, I would recommend that you not use a pair that must be fully extended when in place.
My boat is to be hauled on 8 October and I can provide photos if needed.

Just got around to measuring my Brownell stands:
Rear stands: 33 - 50, but the 29 - 46 will be fine. Fronts: SailboatStands 35 -52

As stated run chain between them.

Blocking: 4 inch block under the keel and the bow is blocked 33 1/2" high in order to let the standing water beneath the dinette run out the transom plug.

I provide the stands and the yard sets them and does the blocking. I figured at $ 50 each to rent them I might as well own them. The yard provides blocks at no charge. They do set a piece of 6 in wide 5/4 decking in the chine for better weight distribution.

From what I see you are using 4 angle stands. I was going to go with 2 vertical in the stern and 2 sailboats forward. Is there any weight distribution benefit with using a vertical or angle stand in the stern? Thanks for the pictures.

Some say to use 3 sets (probably safer), but I copied how Standish had her blocked when I bought her and went wiith my storage yard's recommendation.

I go with 5, but that's just me.
Truthfully, I don't, this was just intentional overkill for Irene.. :D
