Engine cover struts

Post by jo-bob »

I just repowered my 1998 Albin 28' TE from Penninsular to Yanmar. I decided to order new hatch struts from Spring Lift. After installing the new model SL25-30's I discovered that the stock pressure (30 lbs) was too low. Spring lift was very helpful and said they would increase the pressure if I mailed them back. does anyone know what that pressure should be? It can be pumped up to 180 lbs. Thanks, Bob on the North Fork of Long Island, NY.

jo-bob,
Welcome to AOG. Many of us have the Pensinsular engine and these are getting older.
What kind of problems did you have with the Peninsular? How many hours on the engine?

jo-bob,
Do you still have one of the old ones. Are they operational - maybe you can send the news one back along with one of the old ones and they can match up the pressure/tension.

Where on the North Fork of LI are you?

BTW, there is a fireworks show at 3-Mile Harbor Sat night.

We had no major problems with the Peninsular since 1998. It had about 900 hours on it. Last summer it developed a number of issues including needing new pumps and oil coolers and turbo which was going to total about $8,000. Rather than put money into a questionable engine, I decided to replace it with a Yanmar 315. Repowering cost about $26,000 when all was said and done but I have no regrets. It is a totally different boat--more quiet, smooth, and faster. Starts immediately and is three to five knots faster and they tell me it will burn less fule.

With regard to the struts--Spring lift said that sending the old ones to get the pressure from them would not work. I reinstalled the old ones and they work fine but I have the new struts that can be pumped up if I know what pressure to use.

Happy boating

Off topic, sorry...but you should be tickled pink with a repower cost of $26K. I also have a '98 model and did the very same thing. The engine and transmission alone were about $23K and labor plus other parts brought the total up to over $30K. The Yamar certainly seems to be a great engine and while I'll never recover anywhere near the cost, it may make the boat more salable once we are finished with her. BTW, the engine box lift struts on this boat are still just fine.

Your not alone. I'm another silly one. I'm even silly enough to believe (or blieve as they say in Balmer) I'll get 2000+ hrs. out of my Peninsular.

You're right, that was uncalled for, I'll tell you what, to make up for my harshness, invite me fishing when the clock says 9,999 and 'll bring along a bottle of Dom and a bottle of LPR and we'll celebrate when she turns 10K  .
