Fuses

Post by Serenity »

Does any member have a factory recommended list of glass fuses for the dc control panel at the helm on the 28. I checked every fuse and accessories that I have, but the fuse size seems overboard on certain equipment.

Here is a layout of the OEM panel made by Seaward for your reference.

Hey Max,

The "factory" list doesn't really matter if you think about it. Well, other than for maximum size as they should have that tied to the wire used for a circuit. It's certainly useful in that regard.

You'd really want to make sure the sizes are appropriate for the loads installed in your boat. For example, older radar units used a lot more power than today's solid-state units. So the right fuse for an older radar is probably larger than needed for a current one.

Also - what else has been wired in to the circuits? Do a switch get repurposed? I know that's happened on our boat!

Just food for thought.

Moastly agree. My vessel was a train wreck with all the spaghetti installed by the PO. The wiring should be protected for its rating bottom line. However square away any circuits added for "stuff". Radar was not a option on the factory fuse setup as a example of how and for what owners have added "stuff". My underwater lights have a deticated breaker and switch with my new panel. It's a starting point using the factory suggestions for sure.

Mike and Doug I agree. Anything that I have added is fused as per the installation sheets. I spent 33 years in the electrical wholesale industry and have had my share of fusing scenarios. I was able to find on line a fuse kit for all the fuses for the helm station for $18.00, I now have 5-30 amp fuses in one plastic container with compartments.

Splashdown should be in 2 weeks if the weather guys are on their game.

Sounds good Max. When in doubt - small fuse, big wire - is the safe bet…
