Securing main door when closed

Post by zeke46 »

Hello,

The main door to the cabin on our CB 32+2 is secured open with just a round piece of Velcro. It's no longer holding. Does anyone have any good solutions before I start reinventing the wheel?

Thanks.

If you do a search this item has come up a number of times. They are a heavy duty velcro made by 3M and are available at TruValue hardware stores. I used a loop of heavy string on my previous boat and my present boat had worn out 3M velcro units which I replaced with a magnetic one sold at Ace hardware that holds better and will not wear out. This boat also has a small canvas strap that was attached by snaps. After opening the door you just pulled the strap over the top and snap it. I use that when going offshore where the waves are rough enough to break loose the velcro or magnetic fasteners.

Nothing to be sorry about. I did not mean to be critical, I only meant you could do a search if you wanted to read more than I was going to write.

Forget the Velcro, it will only fail again. Make yourself a simple nylon strap with snap hardware and be done with it. It's simple, clean and will last indefinately...

Our 43 has a bolt thru a bulkhead that screws into a receptacle on the door.

Don't know if something like that would be more permanent and more secure.
Calm seas,

I'm looking for these Velcro disks, too, and am not having luck finding them, especially without adhesive backing. I can make a strap with snaps, but would rather try new Velcro first.

Anyone have a part number or a link?

Nancy:
I agree with Jeramy. BUT, be sure to buy a high quality latch. I ordered a 316L latch awhile ago. It was expensive but works very well. The ball tensioning feature works great and the mounting screw holes are almost a perfect fit for the original Velcro tabs holes. It works perfectly. Stop by Essex and I'll show you the latch on the Carol Marie! Don.

I removed my worn Velcro and installed a ball catch. It holds much better, should be more durable, and I think it looks better.

I purchased the catch from Defender. It's a Southco Adjustable Ball Catch, item # 606964, model # M5-10-271-8.

I hope that that helps.

My door may be a little different but it folds and just the back uses a hook. I put a 8"vloop bungie around the folded door and it stays great. Then when closed I hang it on the door stop above.
