A27 - Davit System

Post by JT48348 »

I have a lead on some St. Croix dinghy Davits. These are the Davits that mount to the aft deck and stand off the boat to raise a dinghy.

I'm curious if anyone has seen or is using something like this for hauling a dinghy in an Albin 27. If so what size are they? I think the A27 would need the largest size for the longest reach in order to clear a standard swim platform.

Seems like most owners are using Weaver Snap Davits with the dinghy hauled verticle on swim platform.

JT, I have a set of cast aluminum stand-off davits that were on my boat when I got it but I removed them to make some repairs and haven't replaced them yet. I probably will in the future, but in the meantime, I'm just carrying my inflatable vertically on the swim platform. I personally prefer a hard dinghy when I'm cruising so I'll use the davits and my Dyer 9' dink. Ben

Ben: Would you know how far the reach is of your Davits. I'm trying to compute how far they have to go aft over the water to raise a dink with about a 22-24" wide swim platform.

One of the questions I have is which is going to be better/more practical. St. Croix lift Davits or the Weaver Snap Davits.

Weaver: I don't like blocking the transom with the dinghy but it seems simple and stable. Lots of folks using this.

St. Croix: not sure about dinghy swinging high and it has to self drain when it rains otherwise too much weight when it fills with water. It also increases length of boat.

And blocks your aft vision. I'm towing right now but am leaning toward the weaver alternative

I built davits for my other boat and plan to do the same ( someday)for my 27. The 'reach' of the davit needs to be one half of the width of the dink plus 3 inches over the stern. This figure depends where you place the base of the davit. On the other boat I had a platform but use a boat pole to clear doing down. The way my 27 is now (as was the other boat) I can put the base of the davit on the deck inside the stern since I no longer have a aft cabin. Be concerned about the height of the davit as well.
When you carry a dink on davits in any kind of sea there is a tremendous amount of force so the tie down has to be very, let me stress again very strong or you can rip that sucker right off the boat. You can just imagine the mess this van create.
Attached is a photo of the dink I just built (8'6") That I was going to use for the 'Mary Jo', but someone bought it. I'll build another.
Good luck.

Vic
