Hello,
I'm new to the group and am looking for any info on re powering my 1994 28TE.
The boat has been sitting for many years but I'm going to rebuild it.
I am taking out a Penninsular and replacing it with a Cummins. I'm hoping someone has done this before and could share some of the issues that I will be running into.
Do I need to move the transmission forward or is the transmission location the same for all three engine choices.
Are all the engine boxes the same size no matter what engine came in it from the factory?
Can I re prop for the different max RPM without having to change the transmission ratio?
I will be doing all the work myself.
Any input would be appreciated.

I think but check, you will need to change the side the exhaust comes out of also. I think that's why most who repower from a peninsular do so to a Yanmar.

Yanmar is on port while peninsular is on starboard. Iirc the Cummins is starboard as well.
Any particular reason you don't want to put in a new peninsular? They come to 320hp and would bolt in with maybe a prop change. I don't think the tranny with swap right over as the bolt patterns are different, also you will need a new prop no question about it as the rpm specs are different. By swappin in the Cummins your basically replacing the entire drivetrain. And if the Cummins is port side exhaust (like I said pretty sure they aren't) then you have the issue of trying to make the exhaust work. The engine boxes are all the same but depending on the motor you may have access issues. Your best bet is to first talk to Cummins to see what ratio they reccomend and if the bolt pattern is the same on the tranny. Then gutting the entire driveline and starting from scratch...not a small project with the brand swap

Cummins exhaust is to port.
I'm no mechanic, but from the many stories I've read, it would a be lot simpler and less expensive to replace with a Peninsular. They're perfectly good engines.

I'm in the process of installing a Cummins 4B3.3 in a 27 FC, the exhaust is on starboard side, I do not see much problem changing that. Issue I am trying to deal with is placement of motor mounts to get correct angle to mate with prop shaft. I am very impressed with the thought and design that has gone into this motor. Thanks, Mark.
