A27FC Transducer Mounting

I'm adding a back-up GPS/Sounder and am thinking of epoxying the transducer to the flat part of the keel under the deck opening in the hanging locker. It's not wide enough there to use the traditional oil filled inside mount, so gluing it directly to the hull would be the only option. My boat is (still) on the trailer and knocking on the underside it seems like the keel is only 1/2 inch or so thick at that point and I would bet that it's solid - Not cored

Do any of you have any experience with a transducer shooting through the hull at this location?

I was having problems finding a spot for the transducer. Ended selecting port side just aft of the battery box. Works fine no distortion. Did put a cover attached to battery box to keep from stepping on it.

Is that a shoot thru the hull transducer? I thought the hull was cored at that location? I have a removable depth/speed/temp bronze Furuno transducer located in about that same location on the port side. Still debating to keep using the old black & white Furuno depth sounder or cutting the plug off the transducer and rewiring it to fit the Garmin 740S. Either way though, I'd like to have an additional shoot thru the hull transducer to use as a back up. The location under the hanging locker looks like a natural place . . . .

Yep this is a shoot thru that came with the Lowrance unit, I think it's a H5S. Don't have my manual here. Tried other places but this was the best so I assume it's solid and not cored.
I'm scheduled to take a sailboat to Roatan before the first of June. If that is delayed I may be in Biloxi in early summer.

Don, I mounted my new transducer (Airmar in-hull) on my keel and it works great. Just squeeze a big blob of silicone on a clean spot on the inner keel bottom, and roll the transducer into it being sure that there are no bubbles in the silicone. Push down on it till it hits bottom and check it out on the screen before it cures to make sure there are no bubbles in it. The keel is about 5/8" thick with no coring. Mine indicates the correct depth within an inch or two in my slip (29' 5") as measured with a lead line. Ben

I'm guessing you mean just aft of the engine? That is my second choice. Is your Airmar a P79 by chance? What fluid did you use in the reservoir?

Don, I mounted mine just aft of the hanging locker, under the front of the engine. When you use a transducer like this, you don't use the reservoir. The silicone acts as the medium. It's a lot simpler and I don't have to keep an eye on the reservoir fluid. Yes, it is a P79 if I remember correctly. Vics transducer is basically a transom mount unit and they work very well this way too. Ben
