Dismal swamp canal passage
Hello, has anyone been down the canal recently? We are considering using it for our passage from Deltaville Va. to South Carolina, we are leaving on Fri. I am wondering about water depth, obstruction's or any other concerns. Thanks Joe

Have you checked this out?

We went thru there years ago on our sailboat (both down and up years later) We drew 6' and didn't have any problems, did bump a few logs but we were going slow
It is a wonderful trip, Elizabeth City is a great stop
Enjoy!

We made the passage north bound on Oct 5th just doing a long weekend albemarle/dismal loop. Never saw less than 6 ft of water under the boat and no significat obstructions. The trip was outstanding

You can get a lot of current information about any cruising area on Active Captain, a free boating website. http://www.activecaptain.com. There are reviews of marinas, anchorages, and hazard warnings that are more current than any chart.

Re: Dismal swamp canal passage
Check cruisersnet.net. We live on the Yeopim River which is near Edenton, NC which is toward the western end of the Albemarle Sound. Edenton is a beautiful historic town with a town dock offering excellent protection and two free nights. Electric connection is $5.00 a day. Forbes magazine labelled Edenton as the "prettiest town in the South." It's a little bit off the ICW, but you won't regret the detour. Albemarle Plantation Marina is just inside the Yeopim and usually has very good diesel prices.

Heh. I read the title and was expecting you to tell us about a bad experience crossing a swamp canal.
