Exhaust temperature gauge

Can anyone provide information on installing a exhaust temperature gauge on a Yanmar 6lp ste?

I looked into this a year ago. Form what I found out is there are no plugs on a 6LP to install a temp probe. A mechanic I spoke o suggested that I drill an hole at the exhaust elbow coming off the block, thread it and install the probe. You tube has various downloads on EGT guage installation. If your exhaust gas really goes off the wall, you should notice a significant increase in temperature on the fresh water side.

EGT can be used to monitor how hard a diesel engine is working ( if you have a mechanical engine like I do and don't have the newer electronics to directly monitor engine loading, fuel consumption, etc.). If it exceeds the maximum temperature in your engine's data sheets, the you are overloading your engine. You can be over loaded by being over propped, too heavy, fouled bottom/running gear, too long trying to get "over the hump" to get on plane, etc. Your freshwater/ coolant temps will rise in these conditions also, but your EGT will be almost immediate.
