I currently have Progressive. My policy is a coastal navigation only. It says up to 75nm from shore, but specially excludes the Bahamas and Mexico. Other companies have only given The same coverage options. I don't plan on it being an issue for a few years but someday id like to make the trip to Bimini. I know the boat would be capable of the trip so why wont the insurance company loosen up the reigns?
If it matters the boat is paid for and I do have 10 + years of fresh water boating.

That's a pretty standard " Navigation Area". I'm pretty sure they'll write you for a trip to the islands, just give them a call.
I just switched to GEICO (Seaworthy) and they cover all of the US coast and Canada as a standard. I've had other policies with a more limited area. And I have no layup period with this policy (and I'm taking advantage of that with some late season trips!) but with other carriers I was able to call and pay a small additional premium and extend my dates.

We also use Seaworthy (through Jack Martin & Assoc) and they will cover us for the Bahamas and Florida even during the summer and we found it a reasonable price. Other companies wnated us to head north for the summer months. I would check them out.

If you want to visit the Bahamas (or Mexico) check with your insurance provider and I'm sure they'll write you a 2, 3, or 4 week rider to amend your policy for a nominal fee. They typically don't extend 24/7 coverage to areas outside the US and Canada because if you were staying there long term, your rates would be different and they would probably need to know a lot more about where you were keeping your boat
A friend who took off full time cruising a couple years ago had to drop his insurance all together because a policy which would let him cruise the east coast, Bermuda and the Bahamas full time was cost prohibitive - 3X to 4X what he had been paying for coverage in the US. He had previously made a 2 week trip to Mexico and the cost of the rider to do so was minimal
