And there are several different ones to choose from. I had one that had a 130 F thermostat and I think it was too warm. They make one with a 90 deg or something like that which I think would be better.
You can also use an oil pan heater, that's what most of the folks do on boatdiesel. I also think that would be better than always "boiling" your coolant, but suposedly that doesn't hurt.

What are your reasonings for wanting a block heater? That might influence your decision.

I agree with what Rob said..... The oil pan heaters seem to be the way to go. It will help keep the bilge dry, keep the block above the dewpoint temp (to eliminate internal and external condensation) and make for easy startup after a frigid night. The pads will have to be glued onto the engine since the oil pan is aluminum and the magnetic pads will not "stick". Wolverine heating pads are a popular brand often discussed on BoatDiesel.com.

Articspud, IF you decide to go with a standard block heater I have a brand new thermostat for a Cummins 6BTA block heater.
It is Fleetguard part number 3825424 and is complete including the 120V plug in cord It has a 1/2 NPT mounting for the sensor.

I was very happy with the Hotstart tank type heater that my mechanic installed on my 6BTA. They are sold by Cummins but you can get them many places and maybe save money. If I had not sold my boat I would check the model number but your Cummins dealer can probably tell you the one they recommend.

Thanks for the replies. With some more research, I am now leaning toward the external oil pan heater. What kind of glue is used to glue it to the oil pan?
