Converting Albin 27FC to regular Albin 27

Post by jhawk »

It appears that most Albin 27, s for sale were FC models. How much work would be involved removing aft cabin.
I am located thousands of miles from nearest Albin and would like to eliminate some options before I get into this too deep. I am on the east coast of Canada.
Any info or suggestions will be appreciated.
Regards,
Clive Johnston

You need to talk to AOG member CaptVic. His boat was once a Albin 27FC with the aft cabin. He knows all about the conversion and how to make it nice.

His boat started life as an aft cabin model but the cabin was removed by the previous owner. Vic made the conversion more presentable and basically had to redo the conversion from scratch.

But then...

I had sent Vic a computer drawing of a sedan conversion idea I had. Vic liked it so much that he started building it! He amazes me with his progress.

Here's a couple photos. (Hope I'm not stepping on your toes, Vic).

First, my computer rendering of a sedan conversion...

And now, Vic's boat...

It's hard to believe Vic's boat started life as an aft cabin model, then was converted to a sport cruiser model and is now a custom sedan model.

I'm going to have to buy him the bottle of champagne to break on the bow for his maiden voyage.

Or he and the Mrs can just drink it!

Very nice! First time I've seen a pic showing the immersed part of a A-27 transom; did not realize they did not have a Deep-V. What sort of wake to they make at cruising speed?

I have a "thing" about Deep=V's typical wake. The pic shows our A-25 at 7.6 knots, which was as fast as we could tow our dinghy without it filling from a fountain of water through its dagger board well, which is fitted with a loose-fitting plug. (We'll have a tight-fitting cork next time out.)

I can help you out there, Nick!

Here's my 1984 A27FC's wake at 8.4 knots:
Bunkie at 8.4 knots.jpg
That's top speed for my Lehman 4D61, although others can squeak another knot or two with a prop and/or gear change.

For comparison, here's an earlier picture of Bunkie's wake at 7.9 knots:
Bunkie at 7.9 knots.jpg
Note that you cannot see the prop wash boil at this speed. Both pictures were taken from the helm.

Speed measurements were taken with my Tri-ducer readings and not GPS. The Tri-ducer measures true STW (speed though water).

Also note my son having to lean into the resulting 7.9 knot headwind. Guess he had to go below for the first picture. The 8.4 knot headwind must have overpowered him!

Jon, I think you were just showing off in the top pic buzzing by all the yachts at Sunset Beach. Cool place for an occasional over priced lunch and cocktail. Last time I was there Alec Baldwin was there, boy did he look like s***

Holy Cow, Rob!

You actually recognized it!

That's exactly where I was - heading west.

And, in typical "Rob" fashion... I took pictures of my GPS screen seconds later to validate my claimed speeds.

Don't let anyone tell you a 4D61 can't go 8.4 knots "speed through water". I have proof!

I have been viewing pics of A 27, s on line and have noticed differences in the aft sections.
I am certain that there have been a number of aft cabins removed. They seem to have been nicely done.
