Nipigon Bay, Lk Superior, our first cruise

Post by NickScheuer »

Returned last week from a week cruising Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior, or first real cruise in the Albin-25. Somehow up there her name was changed from the NORD STJERNE to Du NORD. It's a long story, but an excellent pickerel dinner and some wine were involved. Gayle feels much more "at home" in the Albin than she did in the Shearwater Yawl in which I cruised over 18 years.

We encountered remarkably few other boats, most days seeing none as far as the horizon in any direction. We were surprised among the few with whome we conversed that four individuals knew all about Albin-25's. Two of those folks knew about the Albin-25 in Thunder Bay which is noted on the pin map above.

The roads between N Illinois and Nipigon, ON are excellent, with the few miles of marginal pavement near Grand Marais and Little Marais.

I think you'll love the A25, I've just started cruising in mine. Great little boats, lots of room and incredibly fuel efficient.

We are enjoying our A25 immensely as well, being new to cruising. Going out for this weekend into the 1000 Islands - just me, my youngest son (24) and my youngest grandson (12). First overnighter. We will either anchor, tie to a dock, or mooring ball - playing it by ear, depending where we end up. Breaking in the new stovetop and BBQ. :)

Like you, Nick, I am constantly surprised with how many boaters are well familiar with the A25, despite its relative rarity in these fresh waters. That good reputation serves well when docked among the swish cruisers at the marinas.

We were also pleased at all the folks who asked about the A25. Lock masters, dock masters and other cruisers all commented on the lines of the boat and asked questions about accommodations and economy.
People are amazed at less than 1 GPH at 7.5 kts
I think there is a market for a reproduction of the A25 with modern systems under $60-$70,000.
Sleeps 4, incredibly efficient, can be outfitted with AC or diesel heat.......
They get $180-$250,000 for a Nordic or Ranger?????
