Mid-Chesapeake EasternShore Boatyard?

Post by Bluey »

Anyone have any recommendations for a boatyard on the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake, in the general area of Rock Hall, Kent Island, St Mikes/Tilghman? Looking for a place to winter the boat, with a reputable mechanic. I didn't see anything in the "accolades" forum (maybe there should be something there, if folks have good experiences).

We bought our prior boat (Sonny III, 28TE) at Lippencott Marine on Kent Island. They seemed a decent and competent group. My interaction with then was fairly limited but if you don't hear otherwise from locals I'd check them out.

Check with Knapps Narrows Marina. Very nice and competent folks. I'm currently having them paint my bottom and I'll post another report after the job is complete. I've heard good things about their work from others.

Bluey,
Over the years I have stayed at all of these. No complaints. Take a walk around and talk to slipholders.

I will add here that wherever you go make sure you get an estimate before any work is done.
While that is generally not hard & fast it gives both you and the 'yard' an idea where it should end up.
I'd also ask to be notified if the job starts to run over and ask that old parts (if applicable) be shown to you.
I made the mistake of asking my 'yard' to change filters and impellers on a FL 135, I got crunched on time and couldn't do it.
There is 1 oil, 2 fuel, 1 impeller and 1 Racor per engine.
All had been out within the last 2 years and all but an outboard impeller are easily accessable.
I supplied most of the filters & impellers.
I didn't ask for an estimate.
Final bill 9 hours time.
We are in negotiations right now, I'll let you know how it worked out.
Calm seas,

Charles

Finished my bottom painting job at Knapps Narrows Marina on Thursday. A very good job by very nice marina staff. I inquired about a mechanic and they have one who spends most of his time there. He is reportedly very competent. They have lots of space for winter storage and you can do your own work if you choose. Overall this was one of my best boatyard experiences. I recommend you consider them for any boat work.
