Sorry about this but for a smart ass this posting is a high fly ball to center field. A dip stick is Philly slang for a putz, a dink, a person worthy of no respect, a tool. Thanks to all for good interesting information .Very nautical lately prop pitches, and filters, and yes NY harbor is very cool. Not to be missed Jay :D

Not being a Volvo owner I'm reaching. On my Cummins I have one yellow dipstick and that's oil - (same color code on my cars and tractor). On the ZF gear there is an orange/brown dipstick for the gear oil ... are you possibly looking at the gear for this one. The Volvo engine Operation & Maintenance Manual will most likely answer this and many more questions about your power plant. If you don't have one you should make it a priority to get one. This way you'll know a lot more about your engine and how to best take care of it.

Might as well bring in another brand: My Yanmar has 2 oil dipsticks, both yellow, and 1 tranny dipstick, orange.

Sorry, Mudskipper, but growing up in Philly it wasn't a dip stick that was slang for a jerk, it was a dipshit. Fly ball or not, gotta get it right.

Sorry to offend anyone. What fluid is on the stick when you pull it?

KJG,

Which model Volvo is that?

My D6s are set up to have a dip stick on either side for engine oil, that happen to be red, then I have one on the transmission. You have an out drive, correct?

Also, do you have a wider shot of the engine so we can get a better scenes of where the dipsticks are?

And just because I think Mudskipper was laughing at the term and meant no disrespect:
