Teak Deck Alternatives

Post by cct »

So we decided to go kick the tires on some boats for sale down in SW Florida and compare notes. We ran across a Kha Shing 40 that just had the deck redone. I was SHOCKED to see they had ripped all the old teak off and laid new down. It looked great with a marine compass inlay on the bow. The problem was that it was screwed, bunged, and caulked just like the original. Why would you go thru all that just to know you are going to have the same problem in another 10 years? I'm thinking there products out today that you could use to omit the whole screw thing - e.g. 4200? I've even considered PlasTeak or similar product before I would go down that path again. Comments?

I would never install plas teak, I don't like the look. IF I ripped up my decks I would glass them over and finish with gelcoat.
However to assume the new teak will leak in 10 years is only valid if the decks are neglected ornot cared for properly (ie if they are scrubbed often and bungs allowed to pop out).

Hi, completely replaced my decks, finishing it off with chromoveil.Flybridge almost done. Looks good, goes down fast, inexpensive, working out well.
