Need help establishing a value for a 36

Post by marshotel »

Hello All,
As I said in my introduction post, I am trying to put together a deal for an Albin 36. In an effort to obtain financing, the NADA value for a 1985 Albin 36 is in the low 20,000's. This seems to be on the low side of what I was expecting. While I think the deal I am considering is a good one, the boat is considerably more than this value cited by the loan officer.

In my perusing of the classifieds, I have seen boats of the same era into the 40-70,000 dollar range. I am not sure which end of the equation is off - the asking prices or the valuation guide. I suspect the latter.

I spoke with a loan officer at an online service like boatloans.com or something like that and he cited a value of 65-71,000. Errantly, I did not ask his source of valuation. This value is more consistent with the prices I am seeing on the open market.

Can anyone shed any light on an alternative source of valuing an Albin 36 other than the NADA value? The loan officer I am dealing with will consider an alternative source if credible but they always use NADA she said.

Thanks for any and all input! I hope to see you out on the water soon!

Soldboats.com (Yachtworld's sold boat database)
Here's a good thread on the issues with NADA:

Are you working with a broker? They should be able to assist with values and comps. Same thing with your surveyor, who would also be assigning a value.

(If you don't have a surveyor, you should consider finding one. A systematic going over of the boat is very helpful and having a "certified" document can help with later insurance claims if needed.)

If you are working with someone using NADA, get someone else who know larger boat financing.

I financed my 2001 36ET last year and the two lenders I considered both used BUC Book valuations. Check with your marine insurance agent as they should have this available to them. I believe BUC Books are updated quarterly. Also, lenders and insurance agents have an online subscription access to this specific reference. Last resort is a free valuation from BoatUS if you're a member, but I suspect they in turn use NADA or BUC. See also my post some time ago regarding the 36ET valuation.

Forgot to mention: I believe the NADA Book has extensive "options" for additional valuation info in the back of the book, ie: engine, helm(s), canopy, canvas, etc. options.
