Is this electrolisis damage

Post by Halcyon »

The raw water circulating pump for the ACs on my boat quit working. I was kind of suprised at the failure, the motor shaft and impeller parted company. I don't think i have ever seen a pump shaft fail much less like this one did.

The way the shaft broke/rusted in such a distintive splintered fashion is curious. Has anybody out there seen this before? Could the demise been due to electrolisis? I haven't had any electrolisis issues elsewhere.

Thanks Trav

Hard to tell but from the photo it appears to be corrosion. Bad seal?

Here is another picture with the seal removed. interesting double seal. PITA to get out.
Kind of inconclusive though.

The AC pump isn't normally bonded so I'd going to assume that even if this is electrolysis in this case it's due to some electrical failure in this particular pump. Are you looking to repair or replace?

From what I have seen, CAL pumps are not too well respected in the marine industry. I would switch it out for a March.
