Desolation Sound part II

Departing Pender Harbor on the BC Sunshine Coast, we hoped to make it all the way to Cortes Harbor on Cortes Island in Desolation Sound. Planned to catch up with friends there, but the sea conditions we lumpy, so we had to drop speed and ended up spending the nightr in Powell River. OUr friends needed to be Southbound the next day, so the plan then changed to a first stop in the Sound being Gorge Harbor. Check it out at http://www.gorgeharbour.com/marina.html. Beautiful place with newly renovated facilities. You enter the harbor through a very narrow channel with tasll rock cliffs on both sides. Quite dramatic. Met a very nice couple from Sidney BC (Vancouver Island) and picked up good advice on anchorages, etc.

While we were there, the staff asked us if we would mind moving to a different berth as they had a 135' superyacht inbound. After two nights we departed for Roscoe Bay on West Redonda Island. Beautiful and popular bay with excellent anchorage (although many people stern tied). The unique feature of this bay is that you only go in or come out on higher tides. There is a bar at the mouth that is almost dry at low tide! So you plan on throwing down the hook, and curling up in the cockpit with a good book for a good while. Here a link http://www.rockisland.com/~arney/roscoebay.html

While we were in there, we encountered an Albin 27 and chatted briefly with her skipper. Nice fellow from Vancouver Island. Asked him if he'd considered coming to the rendezvous in Anacortes and he said he was sorry to miss it, but it was the same time as the BC Albineers rendezvous. How's that for planning?
