Transmission ID 28TE

Post by Nancy »

We know our boat has a Hurth transmission because we have the manual, but it covers about eight different models. Can anyone tell me where the transmission identification plate is located? Of course the tranny is mostly hidden under the sole forward of the engine, and in the center bilge between the two helm chairs, there is a plywood partition exactly like Joe's (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5336&p=31656&hilit= ... ion#p31656), so visibility is extremely limited. I don't want to remove the plywood only to find that the ID plate isn't there.

What we really want to know is the transmission ratio. Any chance that the transmission on our boat would be the same as another 1995 vintage Cummins 6BTA M1?

Your vintage TE with a Cummins is likely a 1.4 ratio. The plate may be hiding under your tranny cooler. You can also just see my plate in the pictures I posted in the thread you referenced.

I've found that I can reach all kinds of hidden areas with my phone or a compact camera. A firm grip and paying attention to where I'm aiming it and I've seen all kinds of "invisible" areas of my boats! You might try that before pulling pieces out...

Thanks, I thought of the camera, mirror/flashlight approach. There is absolutely no room. And if there were, my arms aren't long enough. :x

I do recall the 6B being a bit of a tight fit..

A handy tool from Harbor Freight is the digital inspection camera. It has a probe about 40" long. Good for those of us who have lost their contortionist license. On sale this week for about $90 - till 7/15/12. A 20% off coupon might also be applicable.

Have fun,

Great find, Joe - thanks!

We found the ID plate. Turns out it's visible (I use that term loosely) from the engine box. Ours was covered with nice white engine paint. After scraping the paint off, you can read half the label from the port side of the engine and half from the starboard side....with a mirror and flashlight. Such fun!

And yes, it's a 1.4.

We have a 330 Cummins (6BT 5.9-M3) on our 1998 28 TE and did major maintanence last year. The Hurth was HSW 800 V1 - ratio 1.40:1 (our serial number 05-36480). Hope that helps. Nannette McCoy
