I am looking at an early 80's A-36 that has 4-5 long horizontal cracks in the fiberglass walls of the forward head. I think it may have been from being lifted in the slings without proper support due to the flared bow.
Any other ideas?

Re: Cracks in A-36 forward head
Hi Meridan, I don't think you should worry about such a major structural problem. The walls in the head are hollow and not part of the hull. It's more likely that a previous owner has left something very heavy crashing around in there in a rough sea. Possibily an outboard engine or a loose anchor. The walls are heavily reinforced with wooden struts which are glassed in and are very strong so goodness know what has been going on in there. An escaped rhino!!!!
The bow would show stress damage if the slings had slipped. Best place to check would be the teak toe rail around the base of the stantions. If the hull has been squeezed this will have cracked. If you are allowed I'd cut a 12" x 12" inspection hatch into the head walls to check. You can cover the hole with a nice wooden panel and a mirror!
