flagpole for bow on handrail

Post by bccanucker »

Hi All: I want to put a small wood (burgee size) flagpole on the bow. Has anyone with a classic with the wood handrail have/done this?
The handrail measures 2" wide and one of the smallest metal flagpole mounts for a 3/4" pole is has a 2 1/8" flange. Dont really want to drill holes in the rail close to the edge. Started to think about making the pole holder out of wood.
Anywhoo, anyone done this?

The PO had the flagpole on the stern rail as you see in this pic. It fits pretty well, but it's a retangular base and angled. I haven't run across one like this but if you find one it will fit on the rail.

Have one on mine and hate it...taking it off as it is distracting when driving from the lower station. Plus it doesn't really fit and puts holes in the hand rail.

If I was going to do it...I would devise a clamp on...maybe with velcro/spring loaded clamp.

Best I could find (with Jay's suggestion in mind) were these fittings from SeaDog:

They're for 7/8 or 1" pipe but you could sand down a 1" burgee pole to fit the 7/8 size.

Roy,

Here is ours (installed by PO). I have been trying to find a replacement pole but no luck (although I haven't been looking very hard).

Thank you all. Great suggestions. The rectangular base is not something I had come across. Looks great. I'm having a freind turn me a pole on his lathe so I can handle whatever diameter is required.
I can see a bow burgee would be distracting from below but I only drive from the bridge.
Rob, Am making a pole cause I can't find one to buy.

In looking at Rob's pic I am now thinking of making a stainless pole. I have tubing, just need to find (or make) the right gizmos to weld on.
Hmmmm. :D
