Aluminum water tanks/white grit plugging filter

Post by etesian32 »

Anyone heard of this? When I looked into the tank it looks like barnacles growing on the sides. I'm being told the chlorine in the water supply is causing the tanks to corrode and one solution is to install a carbon filter in the fill line to remove the chrorine. Has anyone dealt with this before and what was the solution (besides replacing the tanks)
Thanks!

Is this the stuff you are getting out? I have had to clean my strainer a couple of times. I don't like the sound of corrosion in tanks.

It's not that bad. Not as thick. Spoke with a water consultant last week and he confirmed the aluminum and the chlorine causing the corrosion. He says running the water through a charcoal filter before filling the tanks will clear it up. We'll see. My tanks are not pitted yet so I'm hopeful I can get this under control otherwise those tanks are comin out this fall!

I wonder if the PO kept my boat where the city water was particularly high in chlorene or liked to bleach the tanks? How are you accessing your tanks to determine there is no pitting? Mine is a 2003 35 TE, there can't be much difference. Thanks TD

My PO took the boat to Key West for a year and came back to the NH so I assume the water supply in the South is highly chlorinated and not sure if he added bleach which makes it worse. Under the fridge there is an access hole to the sending unit for the level gauge. Looking into the small hole was just enough to see the disaster brewing in the tank. Don't see any pitting anywhere but sight was limited. Someone said hydrogen peroxide would help clear the tank and then use the charcoal filter to keep it under control but have to look more into that. For now the filter will be the way to go and see if things clear up. Not sure how to get the tanks out without major project removing the stove and everything to access the hatch underneath. The port tank I couldn't find anyway to see inside.

So far so good. We have been filling the tank through a carbon filter and we have not cleaned any faucet aerators yet. The water filter has had one or two pieces of grit but nothing like before. It appears filtering out the chlorine has stopped the corroding of the aluminum water tanks.
