48 NSC at

Post by RicM »

Anybody know the story on the 48 NSC that is still listed at <> YS in CT? I know that the broker is bad news, but we are looking for a FL live-aboard and it sure looks like it has the specs we need. I seem to remember someone making a run at this boat on the board here..... I would probably get Peter from Prestige YS to handle any dealings to eliminate having to have contact with RCYS directly.

The fact that they call out a need for some TLC implies to me that she needs a bunch! The question is are the problems primarily cosmetic in nature? Looks like a LOT of wood in need of attention.

If you'd like I'd be happy to swing by and take a look at her before you drive down here, she's in my regular stomping grounds. Looks like a lot of boat for the money with a reasonable turn of speed. And there's a tub! :)

Hi Ric,

She is beautiful - I've never seen this model before - the one thing that stood out for me (we had to deal with it on our A 34) is that the radar is located in front of the upper helm station - not good!! We had it moved to an arch over the helm - you really don't want it in its present location for health reasons or for safety - you can't see what is behind you! There appears to be some delamination of wood in the galley area - may be past leak. Good luck & keep us posted.

Doug,

Got a little more info today. The one in CT belongs to Fred Peters and the broker is Robert Milano. Fred is crazy as a bedbug and Milano is reputed to be one of the worst snake in the grass brokers to ever walk the east coast. A daunting proposition to say the least. There is another one in VT, but it looks rather rough. The pics from the engine room are depressing.

Marcy K,

There were only 9 of these built. The hull was designed by famous marine architect Ray Hunt and the layout was designed by Fred Peters, the mad, bad, genius of Albin. They had a "falling out" and the production ceased. I'm not worried about the radar, being an electronics freak I would probably start from scratch with a whole new 2 station system. I'm interested in the layout as a potential live aboard "condo" in south FL-Bahamas. My wife Karen, just got licensed as a massage therapist and wants a salon big enough to set up her table, plus we both want a center queen, and the ability to fish (rules out most trawlers). We've looked at sportfisherman (Post 43), but I'm not keen on climbing up and down the ladder to a flybridge. The cockpit on this NSC, while not ideal, looks fishable. I was on a 40 NSC this fall, and while it looked nice on paper, it felt a little claustrophobic when actually on board and the cockpit was too small for much of anything. I would be happy with a 35 CB, but Karen really wants the salon.

Yes you cannot see behind, but also realize the safe distance per the Furuno maual is 1 meter. I would bet this installation is safe by those standards. I had a radar mounted similarly on my ex.
