railing rust

how do you remove the "rust" stains that form at the bottom of railings? i don't know if it's actually rust, but it looks like it.

Several good products out there.
My favorite is Collinite Metal Wax, which is from the maker of some of the best waxes available.

Remember: Never use steel wool on a boat!!! Little rust particles will be left over to drive you nuts!! Bronze wool is OK.

Flitz works very well so does "never dull".
Wax it after you clean the rust and it will last longer.

Since reading about it on this forum I use the K-Mart bathroom cleaner "the works" to dissolve rust stains on SS in a few minutes and then just hose it away.

Any stainless steel/chrome polish should remove the haze of rust. Barkeepers friend will remove heavier deposits. Once you have it cleaned up, apply a coat of Woody Wax which goes on quick and easy, and that should keep it looking good for half a season until you re-apply.

I agree with everything that's been said above.
The reason I like Collinite Metal Wax is that everyting can be accomplished with just one step.
Removing the rust, AND waxing.

Apply the product with a rag, removing rust, and let dry to a haze, and BEFORE it is completely dry, polish off. What remains is a wax coating for protection.
An extra coating of wax is always and option.
One bottle will last for a 2 years or more on an Albin 28

Collinite Metal Wax used here as well. It's been my go to product for all stainless for 20+ years. Works great and easy to use.

Flitz to get any rust off. I then use Corrosion X and it protects the metal for the whole season. My railings looked awful when I first purchased my boat and now the look brand new.
