Cruising Fun

Post by Clay Helm »

From Puppy Dog (Albin 27 FC)
I left my port on Holiday Island (L36 05.0N, 076 22.5W) and entered the Albermarle Sound at 4AS. This was June 9th at 0815. The day was bright and the sound was flat. I proceeded at 8 kts to the Alligator River and proceeded South on the ICW to Dowery Creek Marina. 9 hours behind the wheel and I was tired. I arrived in time for the 1730 (5:30 pm) happy hour and enjoyed relaxing with the group. I cooked dinner on a small George Forman grill. This is one of the additions to the galley and it is great.

Thursday, I proceeded to my destination at Pecan Grove Marina in Oriental, NC to meet with other boats from around the state in the US Power Squadrons. 34 boats were to arrive, but due to low water, some could not make it. We had a great time Friday and Saturday.

Sunday, it was time to shove off for home. I left at 1000 hrs and headed up the ICW for Dowery Creek Marina. I arrived at 1600 hrs (4:00 pm) and again enjoyed the good company. I refueled (2.599/gal/).

Monday, I left the marina at 0800 hrs and proceeded up the ICW to the Albermarle Sound. The day was great and the winds light until I arrived on the sound. The wind was out of the west so I had to run into three foot waves all the way home. The Albin 27 is a good little boat and I stayed dry the entire trip home. Speed was 8kts but I had to increase the RPM's to 3,000. Arrived home at 1700 hrs.

Over the 6 day trip, I was behind the wheel for 30 hours, traveled approximately 240 miles, and used approximately 100 gallon of fuel.

I enjoy my Albin 27.. See you on the water.
