Online distance plotter?
Hi all. A long while ago I seem to recall someone posting a link to an easy-to-use online resource for plotting distances by sea. The bride and I are planning a 2 week trip this July and just throwing around a few options. Any idea of the link? (Yes, I can go down to the boat and use my charts and chart plotter but the wife is impatient and needs to know now!)

I believe Google Earth will let you draw course lines and show distances.

Check Maptech. In the download section is the Planner version of their navigation software. It's pretty good for plotting routes. It just doesn't have the functionality to interface with a gps to show your position or transfer routes and waypoints. All US charts are available for free download on the NOAA website. I think it's the RNC ones that work with the Maptech software but the software will tell you. There is also an online chart viewer on the NOAA website. It's fine for browsing charts but doesn't have any routing tool.

The Maptech site is www.maptech.com. They call the software Chart Navigator Viewer. It comes with a demo chart but you can add charts downloaded from NOAA.

Re: Online distance plotter?
I purchased the Polar Navy product (Polarview) yesterday. It works well. I created a couple of routes, then saved as .GPX file for upload into my GPS. After that I had to convert the file to a .USR to make it compatible. I use EasyGPS. Another free product.
It interfaces with Active Captain for points of interest, local knowledge, etc. You can download the raster charts for free. Not bad for a 40.00 program. They also sell PolarCom, which interfaces directly with your electronics if you want to have your laptop onboard.
Interestingly they give you 5 activations. I have it on my desktop and laptop. When they release a iPad version I'll install on that.
