John Deere 4045SFM85 Engine

Post by Netbender »

We are re-powering our 1997 31TE that currently has twin Peninsular diesels. The boatyard we are talking to is strongly trying to steer us towards John Deere 4045SFM85, 4 cyl 315HP diesels. Anyone have any experience with this engine?

I am not familiar with those model Deeres but my boatyard also loves all things John Deere. That being said, most discussions say weight of the Deere is the biggest factor. Doing a Quick Look, the Deere weighs 200 lb each more than the Peninsular. So you would be looking at an additional 400 lbs. Outside of that, it is gauges, making sure the exhaust works out and water intake locations are okay. As with any diesel, you will need to make sure you have enough height on your exhaust for the spill over. This was NOT Albin's strong point. I can almost guarantee you that something will need to be worked out there to bring it up to spec. Good luck and keep us in the loop.
