ZF 280-1A fluid change

Post by furball »

I need to change my trans fluid for the first time. I have a ZF280-1A connected to a pump to remove the oil. The refilling part is my issue. The hoses for the trolling valve cover the fill port but the adjacent dip stick is easy access. Is there any reason not to use the dip stick port to refill the trans? I’m thinking there is a fill port for a reason, but......
Hope this is as obvious as it sounds but thought I would ask.
Thanks,
John

Filling through the dipstick port is not an issue. That's how I do it on my 280.

Don't forget to check and clean the suction filter (bottom aft).

Kevin,
Thanks for the quick reply. Glad to hear that.
I have a spare filter to install. Saw something on SBM about needing a cut down 36mm socket that i need to go back and read. Not sure it was a ZF280.
Thanks again,
John

John,
No filter to replace on the 280 series gears, just a screen to remove and to clean. I think what you saw on Seaboard was to grind/sand the chamfer from the socket for a better bite which is absolutely helpful.
Best,
Kevin
