31 TE Rod Holder Gunnel Inserts 2003

Post by Patrick5590 »

Hi,
I recently removed my 31 TE Rod Holder gunnel inserts and wondered if they are still available new or if anyone has any suggestions on refinishing them? I took them to a local body shop and they won't touch them. The concern is getting the paint to stick to the plastic they are molded in.
My goal is to clean them up and make them uniform in appearance. Right now one looks like it was repaired during the manufacturing process and the "fix" is coming to the surface. I've tried to clean and wax but the results are only mediocre.
Thank you,
Patrick

I just went through this on my 2002. My local automotive body shop sprayed them for me no problem. If they wont do it for you, take it to a boat yard and have it awlgripped unless you want to do it yourself.

They're ABS plastic and easily repaired and painted .. just like a motorcycle fairing.

The most likely suspect of who molded these for Albin would have been SSI Custom Plastics.

I removed one of mine due to cracks in multiple places. These I repaired on the backside with epoxy and cloth. After repairs the front was sanded and prepped for paint. I used rustoleum gloss white topside paint. It matched the existing color very well. Can’t tell the difference. This was 4 seasons ago and so far repairs have held up fine. Good luck!!
