Hope that someone can help me with these. on my Albin 28 TE 2000
1. On my dash, right below the wiper switches there is
a small flap that keeps an electrical socket waterproof,
that looks like a cigarette lighter socket. What is it, and
could I put a light there to light up my depth sounder which is mounted ahead of engine controls?
2. How is it possible to get access to remove the electronic units forward and aft of the engine controls?

Hi Brian,

1. What you describe is a 12v cigarette lighter socked. On my 2000 28 TE, that 12v socket and others in the cabin are all controlled by a breaker on the main 12v panel (above the aft bunk). I don't see an issue with swapping it out for a 12v light, or even trying to find a light that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket.

2. At least on my engine box model, to access fore and aft of the engine control levers, you need to remove an access panel on the floor below the captain's chair, and go up from there.

Don’t be shy, take a picture of your dash and post it right here: So much easier to give advice or an answer if we know what your are talking about. :shock:

Thanks a lot guys, but I tried the cigarette lighter from my car and it does not fit
The only thing that would be able to access the D/S, A/P, and T Tabs around my engine controls would be a snake!

Cigarette lighter won’t fit despite them looking the same, they’re designed not to due to the heat they generate and the spring to stop them popping out. It’s a 12 volt socket you have there like all the albins. I use mine for charging a phone or handheld vhf.

I think there easy enough to replace if needed. Good access behind the bathroom mirror. I added a double USB charger next to the lighter outlet. You may want to look at a flexible gooseneck light. It may be handy to light up the instruments

Just throwing it out there, I received an email a few days ago, maybe it was from Defender, offering marine grade wireless charging stations. (I tried to find a link, but must have deleted the email.) The units are sealed, so unlike the 12vdc power or USB port, theoretically they won't corrode.

Wireless charging is not as versatile as the 12vdc or USB. Also, your 28 te is a go-fast boat, which I imagine includes enough bouncing to break contact with the wireless charging while underway, but may be a nice addition dockside.

Thanks for your reply.
The ' cigarette lighter' I have converted into a light that now shines
down on my 20 year old Horizon DS 100 and I am hoping now to be
able to read it.
The other problem I have, removing the instruments each side of the
engine controls, is virtually impossible. Someone replied that they
are accessible by removing the L shape access panel below the pilots
feet, but one would have to be an orangutan to do that.

Post a picture of the exact area that you are speaking of .. "pictures are worth a thousand words" and it will be very helpful in assisting you.

Yes, the panel below the pilot's feet isn't the easiest access, but the only access I can think of. It is doable if you lay on your back (on top of the water heater on mine) and reach up underneath the engine controls.
