Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
All,
Repowered with Cummins RECON 6BTA 5.9 370 and have two areas of concern:
1) I feel the boat may be under propped as it reaches 15 knots at 2,400 rpms and was expecting closer to 19
- the new prop was a "ACME high DAR 19 x 20 3B .075 cup Nibral"
- any suggestions for replacement?
2) The transmission ZF 63 IV runs at 340 psi until I get past 2,500 rpms and then it drifts toward 400
- the ZF manual calls for between 312-341 psi
- any ideas what could cause this?
Thanks in advance,
Mike (Blind Squirrel)

Seconded... my Cummins 250 HP pushes to 15 knots at 2,400 rpm depending on weight.

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
We hit a solid 20 knots at 2400 in fresh water. Prop is 18x19 with #5 cup.

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
I think I hit 3,000 but not real comfortable at that level due to transmission pressure that heads toward 400 psi at 2,600+

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Hi Nancy, what gear are you running? Interested to know because I'm running an 18x23 LH Dyna-Quad. There is also "05-00" which I assumed was date code, but maybe is the cup??
Gear is Italian ZF/IRM 220V 1.527/1

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Um, duh, gear = transmission? We have Hurth HSW800V. Prop is 4-blade.

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Right - Gear = trans.
Do you know the gear ratio? Interesting that they put a Hurth in some and ZF on the same engine only a year earlier...

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Well that makes total sense as ZF bought Hurth and it was mid 90's or so....

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
I don't know the gear ratio and don't know where to find it.

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Anyone with a similar set up:
Engine: Cummins 6BTA 5.9 370
Transmission: ZF 63 IV
Shaft: 1.5”
able to recommend a prop that works well for them?
Thanks!

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
You will for sure need to know the gear ratio on the ZF as this will make a huge difference. Who did the install?blindsquirrel wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 11:19 pm Anyone with a similar set up:

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Usually stamped on the ID plate of the transmission, wherever the serial number is as well.

Re: Repowered 28 TE with Cummins
Install was Seaboard. Gear Ratio is 1.56/1.57. Noticed that most Albin 28TE's run 4 blade prop.
