Is this original? Any idea what it may have had printed on it?

Is this original? Any idea what it may have had printed on it?

Post by Dieselram94 »

This brass plate is mounted just under the controls. It uses the same screws as the plate declaring which hull number this boat is. Anyone know if it’s original and what it has printed on it? I’m just curious.

Mine is still slightly legible. I THINK it says something about not switching the battery switch while the engine is running.

If so, it is a valid warning.

Switching the battery selector switch off with the engine running will blow the diodes in the alternator. It will no longer charge with blown diodes.

There is a special battery switch with a built in field-interrupt switch which you can connect to the alternator's field windings to prevent such mishaps. Not all alternators are adaptable though.

Easy answer: Don't turn the battery switch off while the engine is running. Bad things happen.

The plate looks identical in size and shape to the name plate fastened on my AD 21 engine. Have you looked on the back of it?

I haven’t looked on the back, but to be honest I never thought of removing it to do so. But I will soon!

Thanks for the reply’s everyone!

I knew I would stumble on a picture of this. From a dutch boatyard. First the picture then as enhanced as I can get it.

Definitely something about batteries and a warning. Not in English though, I don't believe. Not surprisingly, since I suppose those other foreign people have languages too!

In that last picture — I have no idea what it says, but my late father-in-law would be very pleased by those perfectly aligned screw slots!

Well, I think patclem and hetek are right. I seem to read VARNING, also BATTERI and GANG. Could also be a warning about gangs going around stealing batteries, I suppose.

Yes, very meticulous screw tightening.

My 1975 A25 had that plaque and on the other side was in English in almost perfect condition. Flip it over and see if there’s anything on the other side

OldDemps - Are you suggesting that it's Swedish on one side and English on the other? Sounds plausible.

Regarding the screws... Agreed, attention to detail shows here.

Amusing anecdote regarding screws: I bought a Donzi Classic 18, brand new in 1990. The sales brochure bragged about their attention to detail... even to the point of aligning the screw heads along the stainless rub rail.

Now, they were Philips head screws so that wasn't all that hard to do, but really? Doesn't that just mean that if they are not in alignment that in order to do so it would be either under or over tightened to make it "look pretty".

Last... I wish they paid more attention to the screws themselves rather than aligning the screw heads - one screw was actually missing!

Google Translate tells me that
WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING
would translate in Swedish to
NÄR MOTORN ÄR IGÅNG
which looks right.
Maybe a scandinavian speaker could provide the first part of the VARNING?

I thought this would have been solved already with all our accumulated knowledge!
I also have that plate and mine clearly states something like. “Do not turn the battery switch off while the engine is running”. Or something similar, I can take a picture of it later once I’m home but I am on the road right now so I am going on purely incredible memory retention so it might say something completely different.
