Replacement sinks - 28TE

Post by DougA »

Hey Nancy, I just bought 2 new sinks for my '96 28TE. Have not yet installed but they look like exact fit. KaTom Restaurant Supply, item 002-1319. Here's photo of a new sink next to my cruddy old galley sink.

Doug, that's a great find! How did you track it down? Does it seem to be about the same weight/gauge as the old one?

The original sink was Polar Series 300.

Good find Doug.
Was it tricky to get the old one out?

If you find they're a pig to remove and just want to give the old one a tidy up - try rubbing the surface with a microfibre cloth and some french talc. Brings stainless steel up a treat!

Never tried French Talc, but used some 10 year Flitz I had sitting in the garage, and microfiber cloth.
Came out good..

To remove galley sink from our '96 28TE:
Remove the cabinet under the sink. Easy, remove a few screws then pull it out.
Detach the sink drain by un-screwing drain fixture under sink.
I gradually loosened the sealant under the rim with a small crow bar, with a little piece of wood under the crow bar to avoid damage to the fiberglass under.
A few whacks with a rubber mallet to the sink underside, and it popped out.

Not sure who your are responding to, but if me: NO:
Not a direct replacement, had to do some work and elbow grease to make it fit and work.
I believe there is straight replacement faucets from the Scandvik folks, click around on this website and you will find gold.. :!:

Our galley sink is leaking at the rim and maybe also at the drain fitting. So it's time for a new sink.

The Vollrath 131-9 sink has a 2" drain opening. What fittings do I need to get from the drain opening to a barbed fitting (I presume) that accommodates a 1" OD drain hose?

It looks like the sink is held in place only with sealant. Should I use plumbers' putty? Silicone? Something else?

Here's the current setup:

I used this one, on both my sinks.

Check the inside diameter of your hose, probably 5/8”..?

My sinks had a bead of what I seemed like silicone under the rim. There are also 6 little springy tabs on the sink which help hold it in place. Original sinks are 300 stainless but the vollraft is advertised as 304 stainless, which I understand is a higher grade(?). Apply enough sealant to create a continuous seal, but not so much that sink is glued forever!

Great advice! Did you use silicone? What about on the drain fitting?

The original sink was a Polar *Series* 300. I don't think that there's such a thing as 300 SS. 304 and 316 are the common designations. 316 is better than 304. I believe the Scandvik sinks (which don't quite fit the opening) are 316, and the price reflects it.

Plumber’s putty on the drain fitting:
Bunch of YouTube videos showing how to roll it in your hands, then apply it in a ring. Easy.

Doug, how did you get access to the lip to slide a crowbar underneath it? There's no clearance from above or below. There's maybe 1/16" of clearance on the left side (from above), and less than that on the other 3 sides. That must be a very delicate crowbar (pry bar?) you have. ???
