Spring shopping - Seaboard Marine

Post by Nancy »

Seaboard Marine is running a sale this month, and I'm trying to figure out what I can't live without. Their S&B washable air filter is on the list. Looks like a good investment.

I had an S&B on my 6BTA. They make a nice filter with a very strong "neck" that clamps to the turbo and can self support.
Its nice to have a washable filter even as a "just in case" you ever have a "water event" in the engine room. A paper filter element would self destruct where your washable will still be ok to use (after flushing and oiling if salt water).
Oh and yes I bought it from Tony Athens.

(I had first tried using a K&N filter, same concept but the weak neck broke on the first trip)

Pull the trigger Nancy! I don't have S&B, but AirSep washable on my engine and had one on my 6BTA. As Jay said, they're sturdy and will survive a water event big or small.

I've got a few doodads in my cart as well .. spare seawater impeller, clamps, etc. Contemplating the double, double quantum filter and squeeze bulb to replace the Racor, but may hold off until next season. In the middle of cooler servicing and purchased O-ring kits in January.

Yeah, just trying to figure out if I need anything else before finalizing the order. Should be a nice upgrade. Will probably switch to a Seaboard impeller next year.

Yeah, I would have asked first whether it's a direct swap-out for the Sherwood or whether it's only for the SMX pump. :)

Nancy my point was why go with just the SMX impeller when you can have the pump too

To answer your question - yes you can use an SMX impeller in your Sherwood pump.

Yes, will certainly look at this if the Sherwood fails. Half a dozen years ago, when I thought we might need a new pump, Seaboard didn't have a replacement for the GC5.

Still don't ….I forgot you don't have the Bosch 6BTA M-3. You have the JWAC with the ND Pump, right? That would take the SMX Super 15 Impeller....

Sorry about that, was just confirming your specific engine with those acronyms:
JWAC is jacket water aftercooler - as opposed to the SWAC seawater cooled aftercooler
ND is the Nippon Denso injection pump

  .. I was with you Nancy .. your response had me all, but in tears laughing.

BTW, I have an SMX impeller in my Sherwood pump now after the Sherwood impeller spun free from its hub last summer when the black band of adhesive let go. I'm purchasing another SMX to have in supply as backup to hopefully not needing to be used until next year's commissioning.

Rob, yes on the JWAC. I don't know which injection pump we have.

Kevin,
>>the Sherwood impeller spun free from its hub <<
How rude! We're on an off-year for impeller change, but will install SMX next year.
