I'm building a new instrument panel for our 27FC, and I wanted to add an hour meter. This boat originally had the run time clock built into the tach, but that unit had died some time ago. The fellow we bought from had replaced the tach, and had been keeping track of the hours with his log, totaling some 1800 when we bought it.
We happened upon a close-out sale at our local "Gander Mountain" outdoor store. That chain is affiliated with "Overton's" marine supply, so low and behold, they had a complete stock of Sierra boat gauges available at 80% off. So I picked out a whole set of gauges (except for an EGT) including a brand new hour meter. Of course, I could have just mounted it with it reading zero and gone from there, but I thought it would be better to have it showing "real time". So, I rooted around and found a 12vdc power supply from an old laptop and hooked it up.
Here it is after 42 days running, just another 33 days and it will be all set to install in the panel -- long northern Winters have some advantages I guess

Re: hour meter for days
Excellent idea. I have seen this practice done at marinas. The customer is then supplied with pictures a letter certifying the task was completed in confidence.
Its basically the best you can do for a pre computer controlled engine.
