Shaft packing question

Hi all...I have a 1.5 in drive shaft and a drip packing system which needs to have the packing replaced. The hardware is a brass knurled thing that houses 2 strips of teflon infused jute (or similar) and relys on compressing the strips to a point that they only let a few drops of water pass through..

Problem is what size flax/teflon to buy?? I want to have the right stuff on hand not buy 3 sizes and see what happens when I remove the old stuff...any suggestions? (or does anyone know the name of this type system so I can look around on the interwebs)

Probably going to be 1/4 for that size shaft. To be absolutely certain you would need to identify the box or
measure the ID though.

I agree with rc. A 1 1/2" Buck Algonquin or equivalent stuffing box takes 1/4" flax. Teflon is better than wax, neither should cost more than about $5 for a two foot length, except at Westmarine.

FWIW, I use the 1/4" Graphtex Ultra for 1 inch shaft. Adjust for 2 or 3 drips per minute at cruising RPM.
