Isinglass all cruddy

Post by DCatSea »

Does anyone have ideas on how to clean really cruddy isinglass? I've tried a bunch of commercial cleaners, and have seriously considered the "tomato ketchup" thing, but this sounds messy. (Does it work tho'?)

Any ideas will be mist welcome.

We use "210" plastic cleaner, that's what the canvas makers always suggest. But then again, we don't let it get "cruddy".

A bunch of Commercial cleaners? Specifically made for Isinglass or ?? There's usually no return from really cruddy but you may have made it worse? I use the 210 products as well. Excellent for routine maintenance but they won't bring them back from real cruddy.

Thanks to all. By cruddy I mean old and really dingy. I will try 210 and post before and after pix if it works.

Take isinglass off the boat and use a foam pad and random orbital sander to apply the buffing compound — a good flat floor with some padding underneath the isinglass makes the job easier

The best thing to do is replace it. $$$.

The suggestions others have made are certainly valid but temporary. Once you have new, only clean with warm water and terry cloth, store hanging if possible or flat with layers of old sheets or towels in between.

The current cruddy/dingy state is likely from being mishandled over time. Also, keep in mind this all poly sheet vinyl material. Isinglass or Eisenglass was a brand name. This stuff is tortured by uv, temp and chemicals all day long. It was not meant to last forever.
