Yanmar 6LP-STE seawater cooling overhaul

Post by REBMystic »

I just completed an overhaul of my seawater(SW) cooling loops on my two Yanmars. So far so good on everything working :) . I figured I would share some project info for the community. Background: I had 2 seasons with my 2001 31 TE, and last season, on my stbd engine, had a SW hose burst while underway (the one from impeller to the return fuel cooler). I expected I had some backpressure, so I replaced that hose and did a flush with barnacle buster to get thru the season, and waited until this winter to do a full inspection / overhaul of the system.
I removed all hoses and SW heat exchangers (HX) between the impeller and exhaust.
- return fuel cooler, intercooler, oil cooler, gear oil cooler, freshwater (FW) to SW HX
- Disassembled and cleaned all HX. Got new gaskets for all. Oil coolers were worst with chunks of rubber impeller in there.
- The gear oil coolers & hoses were cruddy / rusty enough to replace. Purchased new ones from Seaboard Marine on the west coast.

- I did flow and hydrostatic test of the HXs once assembled & re-zinced and found some failures.
-- 1 oil cooler had a pinhole leak in the shell to air. (not tubes). Replacement was expensive so I JB welded the hole inside and out.
-- Both SW to FW coolers had very small leaks in the tubes. One also had a pinhole leak in the shell to air. I bought 3rd party drop-in replacements from Lenco in Long Island. https://lencoheatexchangers.com/product ... 3218&_ss=r

Reinstall went fairly smoothly. Used the opportunity to clean up as much gunk and rust off the block. I installed all new hoses and replaced hose clamps as needed. When underway, all I can think about is all the hose clamps and if I tightened them well.

If anyone has done a project like this and has lessons learned, happy to hear them! This is this first time I have done anything like this and hopefully did not miss anything.
