A27 Lehman 4D61 Raw Water Pump Removal

Post by rmboelens »

I have a slight leak around the seal of my raw water pump and plan on removing and sending off for repair. Other posts recommended Depco Pumps.

Beyond shutting off pump inlet, removing belt and bolts, are there any other considerations or potential complications on removing and reinstalling?

I’ve worked on two other types of marine diesels, one had timing belt considerations, hence the question. I’m not near the boat and recovering from a surgery so trying to decide if I do this or pay a mechanic to pull and reinstall.

Thanks in advance.

FYI Resolved. An easy off and on, as it runs off the gears, not belt. Depco Pumps did a great job with the repair /service.

Hey Mark,
Glad to hear this. Depco did a great job of rebuilding my RWP several years ago, and apart from routine changing of the impeller I've had zero problems (touch wood)
I also have an '84 with the 4D61; great boat, engine purrs like a noisy-ish kitten.
Do you know what your hull # is?

Doug & Georgia,

Love our engine and yes also is rather quiet, starts right up. I’m not positive on the hull number, deciphering HIN numbers to ascertain that if even possible. The HIN is AUL27189E484. As such, I think hull number 189, built in May 1984.

As the Wise Man once said: The last cockroach to die will be under a running Peugeot/Lehman 4D61. One of my as yet not done layup tasks this year is to renew the engine room sound insulation, on the assumption that every little bit helps.
BTW - You are correct in saying that your HIN reflects your hull # - 189. We're build-kin.
