Re: Dripless seal
Hello Peacock, did you get an answer to your question? I Just bought a 2003 28te engine box style with 1480 hrs on the yanmar 315. V-drive. I trucked it over from Stuart to palmetto on Tampa bay. Except for the sea trial and moving it about in the marina I’ve not even taken the boat out for a run yet. That seal looks impossible to get to. The overall tech expert at Snead island boat works told me the only way to service that seal was to pull the engine out, is that what you heard? Does anybody else have experience?
Former boats: 1982 CE Ryder SeaSprite 34 sloop, owned 32 years, Cape Dory Typhoon, numerous smaller power and sailing craft. 100 ton USCG.

Re: Dripless seal
It is possible to do without removing the engine so long as you have a spare seal on the shaft already. For that you need a small friend with long arms!

Re: Dripless seal
??? Pull the engine?
Are we talking Tides or PSS?
PSS can be serviced in the boat, but it's not easy.
PSS can be changed to Tides, but the shaft has to be pulled. Not the engine, though. At least we didn't on our 28.
Putting a spare seal or two on the Tides is the way to go.

Re: Dripless seal
Makes the old fashion stuffing box look purdy gud.
Add a dry bilge pump system and fugedaboudit.
I had the PSS on the WillieC. It came with it. I serviced it with the requisite new parts when the boat was laying all over my compound in a million pieces. Yes the shaft has to pull back far enough to “slip” the PSS parts off and on. So get the rudder out of the way, etc. etc. I realize this thread is about the 28’, so I’ll stop.
Except to say my shiny new 37 YO Nordic Tug has the conventional stuffing box. Took me a moment to figure it out, but I am so happy to NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE SHAFT just to service it.

Willie, yeah, there's a lot to be said for an old-fashioned stuffing box.
