I am seriously looking at a 2000 Albin 28 TE on the Gulf coast. After an extensive survey, evidence of a termite infestation was found. The current owner says the boat was "tented" about 5 or 6 years ago, but there are old tunnels and frass still visible. No active insects were seen. However, the surveyor is recommending that a more extensive investigation drill pilot holes in the stringers and transverse supports to see if there is structural damage. The hydraulic arm support is located on a partial stringer in the stern and the stringer was soft to the touch and the retaining bolts were loose.
Any thoughts or suggestions about this issue would be greatly appreciated....i.e. "To buy or not to buy? That is the question."
BTW, there are some minor problems with the engine and electrical system, but appear to not involve any great costs.

Re: termites
If it were me - walk away. There is a lot of good boats out there, perhaps for a little more money but you’ll save that in the long run.

Re: termites
Personally I would walk away from the boat unless it was offered at a serious discount. This is something that could haunt you or make it a hard sell in the future the next time is shows up on survey. There are a lot of nice 28s on the market right now. It cost a lot to bring them back to being "right" once they have an issue.

Re: termites
I'm reminded of the old saw: "Theres nothing more expensive than a cheap boat" - or one with termites. Don't walk away - RUN!
