Timing belt on 6LP
Hello, I have a 28 TE with a 2002 6LP and I am looking into having the timing belt replaced. The engine has 1400 hrs on it and since I bought the boat used I don’t know when it was changed last. A mechanic wrote some timing notes and the year 2018 on the valve cover so I’m guessing that’s when it was changed. I have two quotes so far between 2 and 2.5k one includes the valve adjustment and one doesn’t. Is the valve adjustment needed? If not I can have the work done in my yard before Spring. The boat is in Falmouth Ma if anyone has any mechanic references. Any comments and direction is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Timing belt on 6LP
In reading my manual and speaking with the owner of Niemiec Marine in New Bedford, the timing belt should be replaced at 1,000 hours or 7 years, and definitely adjust the valves, that is SOP as far as I know when changing the timing belt. $2,500.00 to replace the belt and adjust the valves is in line with what my research shows, it's a long day, to two day job, mine probably two days, as it's a flush deck, and a bit harder to access.

In addition to the belt, have the tensioner replaced as well.

Re: Timing belt on 6LP
Do the belt, tensioner and pulley.
It’s also worth nothing that buying it as Toyota parts are a tenth of the yanmar price. Roughtrax4x4 here in the U.K. will ship to the states and the kit you need is called CAMKIT15.
Takes about 2 hour to swap them out even with an engine box boat assuming the mechanic knows what he is up to.
Valve timing is quite difficult in an engine box model but not impossible.
